The silver fox is a Samoyed:

Common scenarios of "The silver fox is a Samoyed"

【Alice】 Hey, I just saw this amazing photo of a silver fox. It was so fluffy and cute!

【Bob】 A silver fox? Are you sure it wasn't a Samoyed? They're often confused because of their fluffy white coats.

【Alice】 No, it was definitely a fox. It had a pointed snout and a bushy tail.

【Bob】 Actually, I think you might be mistaken. The silver fox is a Samoyed. I read that somewhere.

【Alice】 Wait, what? That doesn't sound right. A silver fox is a melanistic variant of the red fox, not a dog breed.

【Bob】 But I've seen pictures of Samoyeds that look exactly like silver foxes. They have that silver-white fur and the same face.

【Alice】 That's because Samoyeds are white and fluffy, but they are dogs. Silver foxes are foxes. They are completely different species.

【Bob】 Hmm, maybe I got confused. But I recall a study about silver foxes being domesticated and they became like dogs.

【Alice】 Yes, the Russian domesticated fox experiment. They bred silver foxes for tameness, and they started to look more like dogs, but they are still foxes.

【Bob】 So they didn't become Samoyeds?

【Alice】 No, they didn't become Samoyeds. Samoyeds are a specific breed of dog from Siberia. Silver foxes are still Vulpes vulpes.

【Bob】 I think I see where I went wrong. I probably saw a Samoyed and someone called it a silver fox as a nickname.

【Alice】 That's possible. Some people might colloquially call a white fluffy dog a 'silver fox', but it's not accurate.

【Bob】 So, just to be clear: a silver fox is not a Samoyed.

【Alice】 Correct. A silver fox is a fox, and a Samoyed is a dog. They are different animals.

【Bob】 Thanks for clearing that up. I guess I learned something new today.

【Alice】 No problem. It's a common misconception because of the similar appearance.

【Bob】 Yeah, they both have that beautiful silver-white coat. But now I know the difference.

【Alice】 Exactly. So next time you see a silver fox, you'll know it's not a Samoyed.

【Bob】 I will. And if I see a Samoyed, I won't call it a silver fox.
